Is the blind mole rat a dangerous pest and how do we deal with it?
The blind mole rat is a serious pest that can sometimes cause significant damage to agricultural crops, as well as to various bulb plants it feeds on. Similar to the mole, it digs tunnels underground, but unlike it, the blind mole rat leaves multiple openings in and around the soil mounds, which can be misleading and often mistaken for field mice or other rodents. Unlike blind mole rats, moles fill all the openings of their tunnels with soil to prevent light from entering their burrows.
Controlling blind mole rats is extremely complex, which is why, despite our professionalism and specialized tools, we are not always able to achieve the desired results for the client. The task becomes even more complicated when the problem has existed for a long time, which is why we advise you not to delay, but to contact us as soon as you encounter this dangerous invader.
We do not provide effective extermination or long-term protection against blind mole rats in gardens, parks, fields, or yards, but we offer and apply bio-based repellents that drive them away for a certain period of time.
It is important to know: To make the control of blind mole rats more effective and to prolong the repelling effect, it is recommended that after treatment with any product, you cover the open holes in the ground. This way, if the blind mole rat reopens them, you will know exactly which area of your yard needs to be treated again. This will save you time and effort by avoiding unnecessary application where it is not needed, and will also reduce the amount of repellent, poison, or other product you choose to use. At Bran Insect, we have tested our products and therefore offer only those that provide at least satisfactory effectiveness, i.e. over 90% success rate, while the choice of another method remains entirely up to you.
What does the blind mole rat avoid?
Is there anything that can make the blind mole rat flee, considering that, aside from human attempts to chase it away and remove it from cultivated areas, this animal can live undisturbed for years? In practice, apart from encountering another blind mole rat-toward which it behaves extremely aggressively-it has very few natural enemies and little reason to flee from other animals. In some cases, traces of both blind mole rats and moles can be observed in the same area.
Despite the fact that this pest is almost blind, it has a highly developed sense of smell and strong sensitivity to various sounds. For this reason, it avoids certain scents (natural or synthetic) and also reacts to specific noises.
The blind mole rat is repelled by the scents of bulb plants such as freesias, hyacinths, and crocuses, but you can also plant wormwood, mint, castor plant, elder, or lavender in your garden.
It is also disturbed by the smell of gasoline or camphor, but we strongly do not recommend applying these yourself, as they can be harmful to the soil, your own health, and that of pets living in your yard or garden.
The blind mole rat may even flee from water, but this would require a very large quantity-enough to flood its tunnels and storage areas and drive it away. Flooding is a labor-intensive task and is also not a cost-effective method for repelling blind mole rats.
What are the natural enemies of the blind mole rat?
Since the blind mole rat spends almost its entire life underground, it practically has no natural enemies. With the exception of its breeding period, it is completely self-sufficient. It can even be described as an "extreme hoarder of the animal world," because whatever it manages to store in its food reserves, it has no intention of sharing with any other creature. For this reason, its natural enemies are actually its own kind, toward which it can be highly aggressive.
As natural enemies of the blind mole rat, we can mention only certain hunting breeds of dogs and cats that may encounter it while searching for mice. However, for such animals to successfully kill a blind mole rat, their owners usually need to have previously trained them to locate this pest.
In reality, the greatest natural enemy of the blind mole rat is humans, which is entirely logical from its perspective.
What is the difference between a blind mole rat and a mole?
It is not surprising that many people cannot distinguish between a blind mole rat and a mole, because young blind mole rats closely resemble moles, and it is often difficult to determine which pest has left which traces.
Without a doubt, the more destructive pest is the blind mole rat, as it feeds on what we grow-potatoes, carrots, peppers, tomatoes, flower bulbs such as tulips, and more. If you notice roots in your garden that appear to have been pulled downward into the soil, it is almost certain that you are dealing with a blind mole rat.
The mole, on the other hand, feeds on insects, snails, mice, and frogs, but while searching for food, it also turns the entire garden into something resembling Swiss cheese with its tunnels.
The two underground animals also differ significantly in appearance. The mole is about 10-15 cm in size and has black fur, while the blind mole rat is 2 to 3 times larger and is typically grayish or brownish in color. The mole digs its tunnels using the claws of its front legs, whereas the blind mole rat uses its strong teeth-so powerful that even Dracula would envy them. It is with these teeth that it digs its tunnels, deliberately leaving the entrances open so it can quickly escape in case of danger. This also makes it a more dangerous and agile pest than the mole.
